Today, I am going to discuss Insulation Thickness and its importance. The governments suggest every house owner have insulation for attic and walls for global energy saving. Yes, insulation in your home can help the world to save energy. Also, it helps the world lower greenhouse-gas emissions.
Insulation Thickness: The recommended Insulation Thickness for attic has increased over the past few years. But why? It’s dead simple. The thicker the insulation, the more energy you can save. Well, don’t get me wrong here though. I didn’t mean to use 2-3 layers of insulation for better energy saving. I am referring to the thickness of the products. Why do governments change recommended Insulation Thickness anyway? Reducing overall energy consumption in the country is crucial for every government. Insulation Thickness change over the past few decades: In 1965, the recommended thickness was 25mm. In 1975, 60mm. In 1985, 100mm. In 1990, 150m
m – a significant increase. In 1995, 200mm. In 2002, 250mm. In 2003, 270mm. Insulation manufacturers and installers know all these regulations, and the manufacturers aren’t allowed to produce insulation that is thinner than the recommended thickness.
How can I increase insulation thickness?: If your house is from the 70s, 80s, and 90s; then you may have insulation that is thinner than the recommended thickness today. Anyway, adding additional insulation is not that expensive. But if your old insulation contains traces of asbestos in it, then it is advisable you get rid of all and replace with new insulation. Hire a professional for an inspection. It is safe to assume that your insulation contains asbestos in it if your house is not from the 90s. It’s a big headache, I know.
Insulation Thickness limitations: As I said above, you can’t make it thick as much as you want. I mean, when you add layers of insulation on top of each other; it won’t save you massive amounts of energy. For example, if Insulation Thickness you currently have is 150mm, then making it 270mm would not double the amount of energy-saving.
